Nevada romps past UNM in baseball

New Mexico State bashes Chicago State

RENO, Nev. — The University of New Mexico baseball team lost its seventh straight game when it fell 15-2 to the University of Nevada on Friday night in Mountain West Conference action.

The Lobos (12-19-1, 6-10 MWC) got their run production in the fifth inning, when Jayden Schilling tied the game at 2-2 with a two-run double.

But Nevada (18-13, 11-4) scored six runs in the bottom half to pull away.

The Wolf Pack was led by Cole Zrzmarzick, who went 3-for-5 with five RBIs, and Weston Hatten, who was 4-for-5 with two RBIs.

In Las Cruces, Kyle Brandish (5-1) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings as New Mexico State (21-13, 7-3 WAC) beat Chicago State (5-25, 0-10).

Tristen Carranza had two hits and four RBIs for the Aggies.

TENNIS: In Boise, Idaho, the host Broncos earned a 4-2 women’s victory over New Mexico on Friday. The Lobos fell to 9-8 overall and 2-1 in the Mountain West.

The Lobos head to Utah State on Sunday for their final road match of the regular season at 10 a.m. In Homewood, Ill., the New Mexico State men’s tennis team (12-7, 3-1 WAC) lost Friday afternoon to UMKC, 4-3, at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club. NMSU looks to bounce back at 9 a.m. today when it takes on Grand Canyon before facing off against DePaul on Sunday.

The New Mexico State women’s tennis team (7-14) will bookend the Battle of I-10 this season with a 2 p.m. match against UTEP (6-13) today at the NM State Tennis Center. Fans in attendance will also get pizza.

GOLF: The New Mexico State men are in Phoenix today and Sunday for the 46th annual ASU Thunderbir­d Invitation­al at Karsten Golf Course.

The Aggies are part of a 17-team field that includes No. 1 Oklhaoma State, host No. 22 Arizona State and three other nationally ranked squads.

Starting for the Aggies in the season finale are Tadhg Campbell, Ryo Harada, Michael McGilton, Isaac Merry and Jack Snyder. Merry leads the squad with a 73.42 stroke average through 26 rounds and has four top-25 finishes.

TRACK AND FIELD: Taylor Stutely of New Mexico State had the top finish for the Aggies in the discus and hammer throw at the Triton Invitation­al in La Jolla, Calif., on Friday.

She threw 44.33m (145-5) in the discus to finish 14th in the event. In the hammer throw, Stutely posted a mark of 45.25m (148-5) and finished 22nd. SOFTBALL: In Phoenix, New Mexico State’s Kelsey Horton triggered a five-run third inning with a home run as the Aggies beat Grand Canyon 6-5 in the first game of a doublehead­er.

Grand Canyon scored four runs in the seventh inning to win Game 2.
