Is Pearce still out of step on same-sex marriage?

-

I’M NEW TO New Mexico. I’ve been here four years. My wife and I recently bought property in the area and plan on building a home.

We were married in January 2017 after 10 years of commitment. The deciding factor on the date was the impending presidency of Donald Trump. We wanted to be married while Barack Obama was president, a man who said his feelings and thought on gay marriage evolved over time. President Obama credits his wife and daughters with that evolution. I respect that. He evolved because he was wrong.

My own feelings have evolved on the matter. I was taught as a child that there is nothing wrong with gay people that therapy couldn’t fix. I was taught children deserve a mother and a father and disaster happens otherwise. I have evolved because I was wrong.

In 2008, Rep. Steve Pearce gave a very mean-spirited talk and included statements on gay marriage that were wrong. In 2015, he co-sponsored a bill to prevent states from allowing samesex marriage. That was wrong.

My question is this: Has Pearce evolved? Does he recognize the pain he caused, the shame he tried to inflict on others because of his mistaken belief that there are Americans who should be treated differently because of who they love?

Congressman Pearce was wrong. Has he evolved?
