SPORTS SPEAK UP!

YAFL HAS A wonderful Spring Football League which I have the privilege of officiating. The past couple of weeks several UNM football players have donned their Lobo uniforms and participated with the YAFL kids. Lobo players worked the chain gangs, taken pics and paired off in friendly competition (with opposing teams). Lobo players have added to the fun by running down the sidelines and hoisting up kids after touchdown runs. The kids enjoy seeing the Lobos and the atmosphere has been festive. Thanks for volunteering and good luck to a fine group of young men. — TT

UNM ATHLETICS is looking for donations to help its athletic department get out of its financial woes. This past recruiting season Bob Davie and Paul Weir combined to give a grand total of zero scholarships to NM kids but a whole lot of outsiders will get a free education to the university of New Mexico. I plan to donate and attend the same amount of games as scholarships that were given to deserving New Mexico kids by Weir and Davie! — Mo not the attorney

TAKE ALL of the decision makers involved in the athletic budget situation and lock them in a room with no restrooms, lots of water and beans and not only green chile but serious green chile. One rule — Do Not Cut Any Sports! I think they would come up with a solution to this situation. — Claudie/Rio Rancho

IT’S GREAT to see the coaches from the “smaller” sports and their passion as they make the case for their team(s) to survive the pending budget cuts to UNM athletics, but they also need a large dose of reality. The money is no longer in plentiful supply, and if they truly want to see their team(s) continue, they need to get out and find donors with deep pockets who are willing to sponsor them. Simply pleading their case(s) to the Journal isn’t going to magically make money fall out of the sky. — Joe, ABQ

REGENTS, I hope you have the cojones to eliminate unnecessary sports at UNM. Beach volleyball in New Mexico, really? Cut all sports except men’s and women’s basketball, soccer, and track and field. All others are superfluous except for the participants and a few fans. Most students don’t care. Football is a mediocre money suck. Honor scholarships of those who are cut for two years to give them a chance to graduate or move on. Do you have the courage to make the hard decisions and move UNM to an academic institution? — Fed Up Alum
