CATCHES OF THE WEEK

Carl Ward of Sofia, N.M., caught a 25-inch rainbow trout April 10 at Lake Maloya. He was using a Super Duper. Dr. Kenneth Ross of Albuquerqu­e caught a 20-inch northern pike Monday at Cochiti Lake. He was using a self-tied custom jig. Memo Nunez of Las Cruces caught and released an 8.61-pound largemouth bass Saturday at Elephant Butte Lake.

ISLETA LAKES: Fishing is fair at both LAKE SUNRISE and TURTLE LAKE. Best baits for catfish are garlic chicken liver, stink baits, garlic flavored magic and worms. Trout still a bit active in mornings on salmon eggs, yellow PowerBait, and salmon eggs. Carlos Trujillo, Isleta Lakes & RV Park SHADY LAKES: Trout ponds are stocked, and the fish are biting. Many large rainbows (averaging 14-21 inches) were caught last week. Catch and release large mouth bass and bluegill. Bass are ranging between 2½-4½ pounds. NOTES from GAME & FISH: Stream flow on the SAN JUAN RIVER on Monday morning was at 601 cfs. Fly fishing through the quality waters was fair to good using zebra midges, bead-head pheasant tail nymphs, RS2s, red larva and San Juan worms. Trout fishing through the bait waters was fair to good using jerk baits, marabou jigs, woolly buggers, night crawlers, PowerBait and Fire Balls. Fishing at ELEPHANT BUTTE LAKE was very good using white and chartreuse slab spoons, crank baits, jerk baits, Kastmaster­s, curly tail grubs, plastic worms and minnows for white bass. Trout fishing at TINGLEY BEACH’S Youth and Central ponds was good using PowerBait, Zeke’s trout bait, Velveeta cheese, worms, Pistol Petes, Kastmaster­s and woolly buggers. Fishing at FENTON LAKE was very good using worms, Pistol Petes, PowerBait, salmon eggs, leech patterns and woolly buggers for brown and rainbow trout. At LAKE MALOYA, fishing was very good using bead-head prince nymphs, woolly buggers, Super Dupers, worms and PowerBait for rainbow trout. Fishing at MONASTERY LAKE was very good using PowerBait for trout. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass at UTE LAKE was very good using crank baits, spinner baits, chatter baits and jerk baits. Fishing at BRANTLEY LAKE was good using swim baits, jerk baits, spinner baits, crank baits, tubes, senkos and jigs for largemouth bass and white bass.
