SPORTS SPEAK UP!

I HAVE TO AGREE that (New Mexico) dropping football, or any major sport, requires a lot of thought. I don’t however, think we are yet getting the whole story. For example, a loss of conference money may well be considerable, but if it all just goes back into the football money pit, losing it really wouldn’t be a “loss.”

JOE OF ABQ thinks the “smaller” sports should have to raise their own money. I’m guessing that he thinks it’s OK for “bigger” sports to continue to drain money from university coffers. Know this; as a player, coach, and officials I was involved in football for 42 years. I love football. But football and basketball should not spend money like there is no tomorrow while “smaller” sports are cut. My alma mater (another MWC school) cut wrestling and track to spend more on football so I refuse to give them any money.

SO MO (not the attorney), along with many others, wants scholarships at UNM to be awarded to “deserving NM kids” without bothering to define the term. Born here, lived here all your life? What about those who transfer in during their senior year in high school and graduate? Are they “NM kids?” And who decides which ones are “deserving?” The coaches? A committee of Lobo fans? A poll of registered voters? I love how people demand something without even explaining (or even knowing) what it is they want.
