SPORTS SPEAK UP!
THE SIMPLE SOLUTION to save every sport at UNM is for people to show up to the football and basketball games. That would pay for everything. Last month I took my family of 4 to the Pit for the Ty Murray Invitational. $40 Tickets, $20 to park and $12 Beers. The Pit sold out 3 days in row with no complaining. Maybe all you so called “Knowledgeable” fans here can take a page out of the Rodeo Communities book and realize you need to support our Guys instead of knocking them down every chance you get. No excuses! — JRM-Corrales
SO, UNM is going to discontinue several sports programs to save money and reduce spending. What a farce! None of the current crisis was caused by too many programs. The administration has failed to produce a balanced budget for years. No coaches or players were involved in that process, yet they now must suffer. Where is the reduction in the administration? A 5-10% pay cut across the board or staff reduction would seem logical. Why punish those not responsible and allow the ones culpable to continue to serve with no discernible difference? — Mark in Albq.
READING THE bulk of the Sports Speak Ups! (recently), I get the impression that they believe that UNM should prioritize athletics and sports over education! Student athletics rarely have a professional sports career. The rest of the students almost always have a career in their major. Seems to make more sense in terms of where both taxpayers’ money and students money is spent. — BigChris MY RECOMMENDATION is that UNM Athletics continue the cerebral sports: Baseball, soccer, skiing, and women’s cross country, and discontinue the non-cerebral sports: Basketball, football, women’s basketball, and track. This would save money, but more importantly, would create an environment for true student-athletes to thrive. — Uptown Ed SPORTS EDITOR RANDY: Loyal reader here; love reading the paper. But boy did you ever whiff on your new scoreboard pages. You do realize you have Eastern Times listed for certain pages of events and Mountain Time for yet others? And that you waste precious column inches by printing the MLB standings twice? Please forego the scoreboard service you subscribe to, shake off that small town newspaper feel, and get back to being the strong mid-major you have generally been. — Red
NICK SABAN, Alabama head football coach, received more than 400 write-in ballots in the recent Alabama Senatorial race. Even I will agree that Nick Saban would not have been the worst choice for U.S. Senator on that ballot. — Larry the VOL
WHICH PROGRAM to eliminate is not a hard choice. Cut the one that was 1st in the nation to disrespect our flag. — Larry, Rio Rancho
WHAT’S WORSE? A losing UNM football team or losing football? — Manny G. from the Hub City
