Dodgers, Giants split two

Garver homers in win by Twins; Rays rip Boston

SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants’ Johnny Cueto (3-0) held Los Angeles to two runs on three hits in six innings in the second game of a day-night doublehead­er as San Francisco defeated the Dodgers 8-3 to earn a split.

In the opener, Chase Utley hit three doubles and a single as LA did damage against every San Francisco pitcher except emergency reliever Pablo Sandoval, routing the Giants 15-6.

Sandoval was summoned from third base to begin the ninth inning and, in his first major league pitching appearance, retired three straight batters on grounders. He also had a hit and an RBI.

Chris Taylor, who homered, and Utley each scored four times. Joc Pederson had four hits and drove in four runs.

In the first game, LA lost right fielder Yasiel Puig to a sore left hip and foot after he ran into a wall.

TWINS 3, REDS 1: In Minneapoli­s, Jake Odorizzi pitched six strong innings and La Cueva/UNM alum Mitch Garver homered as Minnesota snapped an eight-game losing streak with a victory over Cincinnati.

Odorizzi (2-2) gave up one run and five hits. Fernando Rodney worked around two walks while pitching a scoreless ninth for his third save in six chances.

RAYS 12, RED SOX 6: In Boston, Wilson Ramos went deep again and scored on Denard Span’s inside-the-park homer, helping Tampa Bay beat Boston for its eighth consecutiv­e victory.

It’s the longest win streak for the Rays since taking nine in a row in July 2014.

Johnny Field and Carlos Gomez also connected for Tampa Bay, and Matt Duffy finished with four hits.

DIAMONDBAC­KS 4, NATIONALS

3 (10): In Washington, David Peralta connected twice in his first multihomer game and Nick Ahmed scored the winning run on a bases-loaded walk in the 10th, sending Arizona past Washington.

The NL West-leading Diamondbac­ks took the first two games of the weekend set in Washington to become the first NL team since the 1907 Cubs to win nine straight series to start a season.

ASTROS 11, ATHLETICS 0: In Houston, Lance McCullers threw seven sharp innings and Jose Altuve had four hits as Houston beat Oakland.

Altuve hit a towering home run that left the ballpark and doubled. George Springer, Derek Fisher and Marwin Gonzalez also homered for the Astros.

BRAVES 4, PHILLIES 1: In Philadelph­ia, Phillies center fielder Odubel Herrera reached way into the bushes beyond the wall to make a sensationa­l catch that robbed Freddie Freeman of a home run, but Atlanta wound up beating Philadelph­ia.

Freeman later hit an RBI triple and Nick Markakis homered.

WHITE SOX 8-2, ROYALS 0-5: In Kansas City, Mo., Eric Skoglund overcame a leadoff homer by Tim Anderson as Kansas City beat Chicago to end the Royals’ five-game losing streak and give them a split of Saturday’s day-night doublehead­er.

In the opener, Carson Fulmer allowed four singles over seven innings for the White Sox.

MARLINS 4, ROCKIES 1: In Miami, Wei-Yin Chen pitched into the sixth inning in his first start in nearly a year as Miami beat Colorado.

Chen (1-0) allowed one run and four hits in 5⅓ innings.

PIRATES 6, CARDINALS 2: In Pittsburgh, Francisco Cervelli homered in the second inning and delivered a tiebreakin­g sacrifice fly in the sixth, helping Pittsburgh beat St. Louis.

CUBS 3, BREWERS 0: In Chicago, Jose Quintana (3-1) pitched seven innings to help the Chicago beat Milwaukee and continue his dominance of the Brewers.

RANGERS 7, BLUE JAYS 4: In Toronto, Bartolo Colon pitched seven efficient innings to earn his first win with Texas.

YANKEES 11, ANGELS 1: In Anaheim, Calif., the Yankees scored five runs in the first and second innings, and Masahiro Tanaka (4-2) held Los Angeles to one run on two hits in six innings of New York’s rout.

PADRES 12, METS 2: In San Diego, Franchy Cordero hit a three-run homer estimated at 453 feet, Christian Villanueva had a two-run shot and Austin Hedges drove in a career-high five runs as San Diego roughed up Jason Vargas and New York.

MARINERS 12, INDIANS 4: In Cleveland, Jean Segura hit a two-run homer and matched a career high with four RBIs, helping Seattle rout Cleveland.

TIGERS 9, ORIOLES 5: In Baltimore, Miguel Cabrera homered and had five RBIs as Detroit beat Baltimore.
