The 6-9 sophomore played at Pittsburgh two seasons ago

Corey Manigault, a 6-foot-9 sophomore center/forward from Maryland who played at Pittsburgh two seasons ago and at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa, this past season, announced on social media his intention to play for the New Mexico Lobo men’s basketball team this coming season.

He has not yet signed a National Letter of Intent, meaning the UNM coaching staff can not yet discuss his joining the program.

In 22 games at Indian Hills, Manigault averaged 6.1 points, 2.9 rebounds and shot 57.7 percent.

Manigault played in 18 games as a freshman for Pittsburgh for the 2016-17 season in the ACC before leaving for a season in junior college. In high school, he was an all-state forward at Paul VI High School in Fairfax, Va., averaging 15 points and 11 rebounds as a senior and

was ranked as a three-star recruit by several recruiting services.

His commitment puts the Lobos current roster at 14 scholarship players for the coming 2018-19 season, one over the NCAA limit of 13.

Junior guard Troy Simons, who expressed concerns about missing his daughter in Pittsburgh throughout the past season, continues to explore options to transfer to a Division I program closer to Pittsburgh within a drivable distance to visit her throughout the school year/ basketball season, the Journal has learned. As of Tuesday, however, Simons was still a Lobo.

This offseason, the Lobos have lost six scholarship players from the 2017-18 squad that went 19-15 overall, 12-6 and third place in the Mountain West and advanced to the conference tournament title game before falling to San Diego State. UNM has added seven players to be placed on scholarship for the coming season. See the accompanying box to this story on B1.
