- JOURNAL STAFF REPORT

The New England Patriots have signed former UNM punter Corey Bojorquez after he tried out for the team this past weekend, the defending AFC champions announced on Monday.

Bojorquez, a left-footed punter, is expected to challenge Patriots incumbent punter Ryan Allen, who also punts with his left foot.

Bojorquez averaged a schoolrecord 45.1 yards per punt in his two years at UNM, including a school-record 47.3 average last season. He had 31 punts of 50-plus yards, including four punts over 70 yards, also a school record.

He originally signed with the Patriots as undrafted free agent after the NFL Draft. He attended Patriots rookie mini-camp on a tryout basis and New England is moving forward with plans to sign him to the 90-man roster, according to Mike Reiss of ESPN. Bojorquez also has experience as a holder.

To make room for Bojorquez, the Patriots released rookie wide receiver Darren Andrews out of UCLA. The 6-foot, 200-pound Bojorquez, 21, played two seasons at UNM after transferring from Cerritos Community College.
