CATCHES OF THE WEEK

Caden Floyd, 15, of Maxwell, caught a 21½-inch rainbow at Maxwell Lake 13 on Mother’s Day. His mom, Becky

Floyd, caught a 20-inch rainbow. They were trolling worm harnesses and shaky shad lures.

Valerie Sparks of Albuquerqu­e caught a 20-inch and a 19-inch walleye on Sunday at Abiquiu Reservoir. She was using a jig and worm combinatio­n.

Isaac Sanchez of Albuquerqu­e caught a 27¼-inch, 1-pound, 6-ounce walleye May 10 at Cochiti Lake. He was fishing from shore and using a wacky rig.

Grace Vijal of Albuquerqu­e caught a 41-inch, 24 -pound northern pike Saturday at Eagle Nest Lake. She was using PowerBait.

Angelo Lovato, 8, of Albuquerqu­e caught a 27-inch catfish May 10 at Tingley Beach. He was using a hot dog.

AROUND THE STATE

BASS QUALIFIER: Coy Wagley, 15, and Cap Massey, 16, both of Animas, won the New Mexico Bass Angler Sportsman Society National High School Team Qualifier at Elephant Butte Lake last week. Wagley caught and released a 7.2-pound largemouth. He was using a 4-inch senko. Massey caught and released a 6.15-pound largemouth bass. He was using a 4-inch senko.

LAKE MALOYA: The Sugarite Canyon State Park Annual Fishing Derby will be held May 26-June 3. For more informatio­n, contact the park office at 575-445-5607.

SHADY LAKES: Trout ponds are stocked and the fish are biting. Many large rainbows (averaging 14 to 21 inches) were caught. Catch and release large mouth bass and bluegill. Bass are ranging between 2½-4½ pounds.

NOTES from GAME & FISH

Fishing was very good at EL VADO LAKE using crank baits, jerk baits, tubes, Panther Martins, swim baits and worms for smallmouth bass.

At UTE LAKE, it was another great week for crappie fishing as anglers did very well using small grubs, minnows and road runners.

Fishing at CLAYTON LAKE was very good with many limits of trout caught by anglers using PowerBait.

At LAKE MALOYA, fishing was very good using pink PowerBait, Pistol Petes, gold Kastmaster­s and brown woolly buggers for trout up to 20 inches.

At LAKE ALICE, trout fishing was good using Pistol Petes, gold spoons, woolly buggers, Panther Martins and PowerBait for trout.

Streamflow on the CIMARRON RIVER below Eagle Nest on Monday morning was 22.6 cfs. Trout fishing was good using worms, yellow sallies, golden stone flies, micro mays and bead-head hares ears.

Streamflow on the PECOS RIVER near Pecos on Monday morning was 21.9 cfs. Trout fishing was very good using worms, PowerBait, Fire Balls, prince nymphs, copper John Barr and small spinners.

Fishing at COCHITI LAKE was good using minnows for crappie.

At FENTON LAKE, fishing was good for anglers using worms, Pistol Petes, Fire Balls, PowerBait, mop flies and small spoons for brown and rainbow trout.

Fishing at NAVAJO LAKE was good using crank baits, jerk baits, curly tail grubs, senkos, worms, tubes and chatter baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass.

Streamflow on the SAN JUAN RIVER on Monday morning was 396 cfs. Fishing was a bit up and down like the flows on the river this past week. Best flies through the high-quality waters were small fore and afts, cream larva, small bead-head pheasant tail nymphs, crystal flash midges, RS2s, and foam wing emergers. Trout fishing through the bait waters was fair using small spoons, Pistol Petes, copper John Barrs, night crawlers and Fire Balls.

Fishing at ELEPHANT BUTTE LAKE was very good using spoons, crank baits, jerk baits, curly tail grubs, streamers and minnows for white bass.

At SANTA ROSA LAKE, fishing was good using crank baits, swim jigs, tubes, senkos, chatter baits and creature baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass.
