Texas places Moore on DL

-

CHICAGO — The Texas Rangers have put left-hander and Moriarty High graduate Matt Moore on the 10-day disabled list with right knee soreness.

The Rangers recalled righthander Ariel Jurado from Double-A Frisco. The 22-yearold Jurado was scheduled to start Saturday night against the Chicago White Sox in his major league debut. He was 1-1 with a 2.57 ERA in six starts for Frisco this season.

Moore has felt discomfort in the knee since spring training. He allowed five runs on five hits in 3⅔ innings on Friday night against the White Sox. He is 1-5 with a 7.99 ERA in 10 games.

“He fought through it, but just felt like it got to a point to where we have to give him time to calm down,” manager Jeff Banister said.

FIGHT: Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon thought Amir Garrett’s celebration after striking out Javier Baez was reminiscent of an animated musical. Baez took exception and ignited a benchclearing scrum.

“If you’re going to show somebody up, at least man up and stay there or walk this way,” Baez said Saturday.

Teammates had to separate him and Garrett after the top of the seventh inning of the Cubs’ 11-inning 5-4 loss to the Reds in the first game of the split doubleheader at Great American Ball Park.

“If you want to fight, you’re in the wrong sport, first of all,” Baez said. “When somebody got in front of him, he started walking to us. Whatever. We lost.”

Maddon assessed Garrett’s yell, accompanied by arm gestures and an extended stare toward Baez in an amusing manner.

TWINS: First baseman Joe Mauer was placed on the 10-day disabled list on Saturday with a cervical strain that included some concussion-like symptoms.

But Mauer doesn’t officially have a concussion. Twins manager Paul Molitor said Mauer showed some balance issues and sensitivity to light after coming out of Friday game when he said his neck, “locked up,” on him.

The Twins took no chances, deciding to put Mauer through a Sport Concussion Assessment Tool 5 test. The SCAT-5 is a standardized concussion screening tool.

OHTANI TIME: Angels twoway star Shohei Ohtani pitches at home against Tampa Bay. He’s 3-1 with a 3.58 ERA in six starts, and struck out 11 Twins in his last outing. The 23-yearold rookie is hitting .321 with six homers.

NOT AGAIN: The Dodgers will see how Rich Hill is feeling today, a day after the lefty starter lasted just two pitches at Washington. Hill was pulled in the first inning with a recurrence of the blister problem that has already put him on the DL twice this season.
