Employment is key to solving the border problem

-

FOR THE LIFE of me, I do not understand why our politicians, including the present and past presidents, keep insisting that we need to build a wall and send troops to our southern border to keep illegal immigrants from coming into our country. Down deep, I am certain that they know that this is not the answer to our problem. Instead of treating the cause, they choose to treat the symptoms.

If you want to get to the root of this problem, you have to ask yourselves, “Why do illegal immigrants choose to come to our country?” The obvious answer is to find work to support themselves and their families. And who is responsible for this? The two main causes for this problem are: (1) the weak Mexican economic infrastructure, which cannot provide enough employment for its people and (2) our U.S. employers that choose to avail themselves of the abundant cheap slave labor from Mexico.

So, if we are sincere about stopping this influx of illegal immigrants from Mexico, our politicians and our president have to develop a backbone and attack these major causes of the problem. As to what they can do to help with the Mexican economy, I leave that to our financial wizards to figure out. However, as to the other cause, they need to start prosecuting, jail and fine all U.S. employers that hire illegal immigrants. Doing this alone will result in a significant, if not total reduction in the influx of illegal immigrants.

However, you and I know that this is not going to happen, at least not right away, because our U.S. employers have our politicians in their back pockets. You start prosecuting them and their monetary political and non-political contributions will dry up. And this, our politicians cannot afford. For so long they have been tied to that “money teat” that it would be almost impossible to wean them off it.

One thing is for certain; building that horrendously expensive wall will not work. It will only serve to further alienate people just like it did in Germany, Korea and Vietnam. It is a complete waste of taxpayers’ money that could be better spent helping lessfortunate people in our country.

I truly hope that they come to their God-given senses and start doing the right thing. NAHUM B. CASTILLO Albuquerque
