SPORTS SPEAK UP!

- sportsspeakup@abqjournal.com

JUST WANTED to let you know how much I appreciate your baseball page with the in depth box scores showing batting averages and ERA for the pitchers. Nice to see how your favorite, or not so favorite, player is doing. Keep up the good work. — Patrick43

GROWING UP, I spent many summer days jumping into Lake Erie. For an 0-16 season, Browns coach Hue Jackson should have to do something a little more challenging. I have a few suggestions. — Steelers fan

OBITUARY: Sports Speak Up, approximately 15 years old and in failing health for months due to the disease “limited space,” passed away on May 19, 2018. Having been seen in public only once during the past 3 weeks, apparently looking at the headline story about Motocross published in place of it was too much of a shock for SSU to overcome. Taking on topics such as UNM athletics and the MWC, among others, in its heyday SSU appeared 4 to 5 times per week. It will be missed. Thanks to all of the caretakers for thoughtful comments over the years. — Joseph

THE FACT that eliminating football is the 2nd choice in the “Journal” poll should be eye opening to UNM. Maybe it is time for UNM to seriously consider moving to the FCS division and joining the Big Sky Conference. The FCS plays 11 rather than 12 games. This would eliminate the late November game which historically has the worst attendance. Hopefully this would allow for all games to be played on Saturdays at traditional fan friendly times. Playing in the FCS would allow more New Mexico athletes to have a chance to play at UNM, which many fans want. — Bill in Rio Rancho

I WENT to vote on the online poll to determine which sports should be cut at UNM. To my surprise there wasn’t an option for NONE. Please consider one vote for NONE. Wondering how many others feel as I do. Perhaps it’s time for the regents to consider changing course. Give the administration time to balance their budget and the supporters of UNM time to donate and step up and buy tickets. See where we are a year from now. — Dennis Rivera
