A week after completing a grueling distance trifecta at the Class 6A state meet, Volcano Vista senior Jericho Cleveland was in Boston for the adidas High School Dream Mile last weekend.

And he acquitted himself well, nearly winning the race.

Cleveland, who signed his national letter of intent Wednesday with the University of Colorado at the Hawks’ team banquet, finished third in Boston in a time of 4 minutes, 8.95 seconds.

He had periodic leads in the race and was still in front until the final 50 meters or so when he was overtaken by Michael Phillips of Tallahassee, Fla. Cleveland was under the weather for the race, his father Shane said. Phillips’ winning time was 4:08.03. Cleveland has enjoyed an excellent spring running the mile at prep meets in Phoenix and San Diego, and he captured the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter Class 6A crowns at state.

It is unknown if he will compete in next weekend’s Great Southwest meet at UNM.

TENNIS HONORS: Eldorado’s Carmen Corley and Albuquerque Academy’s Abraham Yohannes both have been honored by the U.S. Tennis Association.

The Eagles’ sophomore and Chargers’ junior both have been named to the USTA’s Junior Leadership Team by virtue of their sportsmanship and character both on and off the court. About 30 players nationwide receive such accolades.

Yohannes earlier this month won the Class 5A state singles title. Corley was the 2017 Class 6A state singles champ and won 6A state doubles two weekends ago, and she is ranked in the top 20 of the USTA Girls’ 16 national standings.

THIS AND THAT: La Cueva’s baseball team jumped up to No. 13 in the MaxPreps’ Xcellent 25 rankings in the latest poll; the Bears recently won the 6A state title. … Piedra Vista baseball coach Mike McGaha has resigned; he led the Panthers to four championships in the state’s second-largest division (2010-12 and 2014) and guided Piedra Vista into the 6A title game earlier this month. … Albuquerque Academy baseball coach Andy Williams also has resigned. Williams led the Chargers for seven seasons, leading them to the Class 5A title in 2015 and to the 5A title game in 2017.
