YOU GOTTA LIKE IT
Shakespeare on the Plaza presents the first of eight free performances of “As You Like It.” The season also includes“The Merry Wives of Windsor”
A pair of Shakespearean comedies are planned for Albuquerque’s renovated Civic Plaza, with 15 free evening performances beginning tonight.
Presented by the city and The Vortex Theatre, Shakespeare on the Plaza will stage “As You Like It” and “The Merry Wives of Windsor” with theatrical lighting and sound during the fully costumed productions, organizers said in a news release.
All performances — Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays — begin at 7:45 p.m.
“As You Like It” follows sibling rivalries, exiled lords, lovers in disguise and some of Shakespeare’s best-known speeches (think “All the world’s a stage”), and ends in reconciliation and marriage, according to a news release.
In “The Merry Wives of Windsor,” the lecherous Falstaff attempts to seduce married women, who see through him, but lead him on in order to turn the tables on him.
“As You Like It” will be performed tonight, Sunday, Thursday, and then June 16, 22, 24, 28 and 30.
“The Merry Wives of Windsor” will be performed Saturday, and then June 15, 17, 21, 23, 29, and July 1.
Organizers suggest bringing your own chairs as seating is limited.
There will be local food trucks, and beer and wine for those with valid IDs.
Paid parking is available beneath Civic Plaza. Street parking and a number of other parking structures also are in the area.
