Painting with a Purpose event benefits Relay for Life

Astroke of a paintbrush can turn something ordinary into something extraordinary, especially when you have a personal coach.

“The fun thing about it is we have people who walk in who say they can’t even draw a stick figure, much less paint, and so we built it for those who don’t know how to paint and those who know how to,” said Painting with a Twist owner Kimberly Berg. “We’re here for those who have never touched a brush. It’s a great stress reliever. It is a great way to get away from life for a couple of hours.”

On Thursday, June 14, Painting with a Twist will host its Painting with a Purpose to benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Attendees will paint “Blue Door” for the fundraiser. Each month, Painting with a Twist holds the fundraiser for local nonprofits. Fifty percent of the proceeds go back into their organization. Nonprofits interested in being a part of Painting with a Cause can contact Painting with a Twist for consideration.

Painting with a Twist hosts a number of adult painting events each month. Paintings for scheduled events can be viewed on the Painting with a Twist website, paintingwithatwist.com, and patrons can sign up there. Costs normally vary from $35 to $45 per seat. Private parties also can be booked. Berg said she has 10,000 paintings to choose from.

A paint palette, brushes, apron and needed supplies are provided. Attendees are welcome to bring light finger foods, and a cash bar offering New Mexico wines and beer as well as non-alcoholic beverages will be available. Guests are asked to arrive 15 to 20 minutes early to get situated before the class starts.

Painting with a Twist offers children’s painting events on Saturdays and is offering kids camp in June, July and August. The “Under the Sea” camp will be held from Monday, June 18 through June 22. Children will create their own paintings featuring jellyfish, dolphins, octopuses and other sea life. There will be two Kids Camp events in July: “Meet the Masters” from July 9 through 13 and “Lore: Fantasy & Sci Fi Art” from July 23 through 26. The camps will conclude with “Out of This World” from Aug. 6 through Aug. 10, according to Berg. Also just for children is Twisted Stories, which features a story time with a theme that attendees will later paint. Twisted Stories include “No Monkey Business,” “Dragon Time,” “Dinosaur Tales” and “Cool Cat.”
