Daughter recalls childhood in woods of north N.M.

AT BOOKWORKS: Chloe

Rachel Gallaway will sign “The Soulful Child” at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 16.

Folk singer Jerry Gallaway and ex-ballet dancer Reva Lynn Gallaway leave behind a life of opportunity and fame to raise a family in the woods of northern New Mexico. For six children born in the wild with no birth certificates, no worldly identity, only the song of nature printed on them at birth, the woods became a place of learning and a place of refuge, until tragedy uprooted their foundation, leaving the youngsters split between two worlds. When forced to choose for themselves, would they live in nature with their parents or seek a new life in society?

The Bookworks Book Club will discuss “Sing, Unburied, Sing” by Jesmyn Ward at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 13.

Bookworks is at 4022 Rio Grande NW. Call 344-8139.

AT PAGE ONE: Twyla Wren will discuss and sign “Ouija High” at 3 p.m. today.

Darla May is a typical sophomore high school girl, except she’s bona fide “W.T.” — living in a trailer park with her drunk dad and hypercritical mother. Her social crowd of misfits either spouts off about Jesus or tricks her into drinking blood. If she could just get through the torture of a new school and her first boyfriend, she might actually survive 10th grade. Things take a turn for the evil when she is given a Ouija board. Summoning spirits to do your bidding, what could go wrong, right?

Page One Books is at 5850 Eubank NE, Suite B-41, in the Mountain Run Shopping Center. Call 294-2026.
