CATCHES OF THE WEEK

Greg “Doc” Scargill of Santa Fe caught a 42-inch, 22-pound tiger muskie Saturday at Bluewater Lake. He was trolling a 7-inch flatstick.

Michael Olson of Santa Fe caught and released a 38-inch, 15-pound northern pike June 5 at Cochiti Lake. He was using a crankbait.

Adrian Dupree, 9, of Albuquerqu­e, caught a 25-inch, 6-pound catfish June 7 at Tingley Beach. He was using cut bait.

AROUND THE STATE

PECOS RIVER: The river and its tributarie­s above the village of Pecos in Santa Fe National Forest have been closed until further notice due to extreme fire danger.

BONITO LAKE: Closed by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage. The lake is scheduled to reopen in August.

JEMEZ WATERS, FENTON, MONASTERY, MORPHY LAKES:

Closed until further notice due to extreme fire danger.

WHITEWATER CREEK: Native Gila trout restoratio­n efforts will continue in Whitewater Creek on June 20-21. The Department of Game and Fish will remove non-native trout from Whitewater Creek to allow restoratio­n of Gila trout to its native range. This portion of the project starts at the Gila National Forest boundary below the Catwalk National Recreation Trail parking area and continues upstream approximat­ely two miles to the intersecti­on with Gold Dust Trail.

SHADY LAKES: The rainbow trout are averaging 10 to 12 inches, but many 18- to 24-inch rainbows were caught. Trout are biting on night crawler worms, salmon eggs and power bait. Catch-and-release largemouth bass and bluegill activity is strong. Bass are ranging 2½ to 4½ pounds, but 6½-pound bass can be seen from the lake banks. Bass and bluegill are biting on plastics and top-water lures.

NOTES from GAME & FISH

Streamflow on the SAN JUAN RIVER on Monday morning was 627 cfs. Fishing through the high-quality waters was good using small red annelids, small bead-head pheasant tail nymphs, fore and afts, RS2s, ant patterns, Griffiths gnats, Chernobyl ants, hoppers and foam beetles. Trout fishing through the bait waters was good using jerk baits, Kastmaster­s, San Juan worms, copper John Barrs, chamois leeches and Fire Balls. At NAVAJO LAKE, fishing was good using worms for perch. At UTE LAKE, fishing was excellent using small plastics and worms for bluegill. EAGLE NEST LAKE is open to boating. Fishing from the bank was very good using worms, salmon eggs and small spoons for perch. Streamflow on the RED RIVER below the hatchery Monday morning was 35.1 cfs. Trout fishing was good using Fire Balls, poundmeist­ers, San Juan worms, small spoons and PowerBait. At LAKE MALOYA, fishing was very good using PowerBait, Pistol Petes, gold spinners, elk hair caddis, beadhead wooly buggers and bead-head pheasant tail nymphs for trout. Fishing at LAKE ALICE was good using Pistol Petes, PowerBait, spoons and an assortment of flies for rainbow trout. Fishing in TINGLEY BEACH’S Central and Youth ponds was good using liver, homemade dough bait, cut bait, shrimp, hot dogs and worms for catfish. Monday morning water flows on the CHAMA RIVER below El Vado and Abiquiu were 733 cfs and 902 cfs respective­ly. Trout fishing below El Vado was good using weighted woolly buggers, Kastmaster­s, Panther Martins, night crawlers, Fire Balls and PowerBait for brown and rainbow trout. At ABIQUIU LAKE, fishing was good using tubes, jerk baits, soft swim baits, crankbaits, Rooster Tails, curly tail grubs and small swim baits for smallmouth bass. Fishing at COCHITI LAKE was fair to good using corn for carp. At ALTO LAKE, fishing was good using worms, liver and hot dogs for catfish.
