FOR THE FANS

Country singer Justin Moore tours heavily as a way to give back

- BY ADRIAN GOMEZ JOURNAL ARTS EDITOR

It’s been two years since Justin Moore released “Kinda Don’t Care.”

He’s been on tour for nearly that same amount of time.

“I’ve been out on the road from October until now,” he says in a recent phone interview. “I’ve had a few weeks off, and it’s been a nice little window in my life.”

The 34-year-old country singer isn’t slowing down, either.

In the past five months or so, he’s written about 40 songs for his next album.

“I’m just trying to get a nucleus for the album,” he says of the writing. “We’re going to head into the studio to get going on the fifth album.”

With this project, Moore is looking forward to making a more traditional country album.

He has the support of his label, as well as his family, to make the change.

“All you can hope for at the end of the day is something that you’re proud of,” he says. “It’s my name on the album, and I want to remain proud of what I put out. It’s a rarity that my record label would give me their blessing for this type of album. It’s different than anything I’ve done. I’m thankful.”

Over the course of his 15-year career, Moore has carved out a niche for himself in country music.

He keeps a traditional side while writing tracks for mainstream radio.

In fact, his singles “You Look Like I Need a Drink” and “Somebody Else Will” both hit No. 1 on the country airplay charts.

Working on his fifth album is also something he can’t believe.

“If you would have told me 15 years ago that I would have five albums, I wouldn’t have believed you,” he says. “It’s really cool to be able to have this in my life. There’s a lot of hard work and sacrifice. I also feel very blessed to have hit records on the radio. This is why I stay on tour so much. I want to give back to the fans.”

Moore’s also been performing songs from his early days in music, and it’s taking him down memory road.

“Those songs I still really like,” he says. “I was writing on the road with my producer. There are some demos I still listen to and wonder who is singing. I was 18 or 19 at the time. I wasn’t married or have any kids. I’m in a different place in my life now, and I can hear how young I was as a performer. It’s crazy but great to get this opportunity to revisit those songs.”
