Partnership promotes economic development
NM Tech, Hispano CofC strive to boost ties between Latin America, NM
The New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce have announced a partnership aimed at promoting “economic development from Latin America to Albuquerque and the rest of New Mexico.”
Among the types of activities that may arise from the five-year partnership, according to a signed agreement between the two organizations:
Convening groups of international experts in education, government and trade chambers.
Promoting international summits in science and technology.
Participating in and supporting conferences for public officials.
At a news conference Tuesday, Hispano Chamber President Ernie C’de Baca said the partnership will allow both organizations to combine resources and prioritize “two of the most important things to focus on in New Mexico: education and economic development.”
C’de Baca identified The Americas Conference for Mayors, which held its inaugural gathering last year in Albuquerque, as an example of an event the partnership will promote.
NM Tech President Stephen G. Wells said the partnership is a step toward “creating a community of scholars that transcends borders.”
“I can’t think of a better time to do something like this, for us and for our neighbors,” Wells said.
The agreement states that the joint program will be coordinated by Juan de Dios Pineda, New Mexico Tech’s director of the Latin American Research Initiative for STEM Education, and Jim Garcia, vice president of the Hispano Chamber.
Van Romero, vice president for research and economic development at NM Tech, said he thought it was likely the partnership would last well beyond the five-year term of the agreement.
