Subpoena Trump over Mueller probe
WILL HE OR won’t he?
Donald Trump teases endlessly about an interview with Special Counsel Robert Mueller, but the U.S. Supreme Court may ultimately have to decide whether the president of the United States can or cannot be compelled to testify in a Department of Justice special investigation like the one currently underway.
Don’t Americans believe that the president — any president — is no more or no less than an American citizen? And as such, he or she has the same rights and responsibilities as any other citizen?
This particular president has eagerly embraced this country’s complex laws and legal system — think of the tax credits that resulted in zero taxes due, multiple bankruptcies and thousands of other lawsuits involving Donald Trump that wound their way, and still wind their way, through many, many U.S. courts.
Even though he now finds himself in the Oval Office, it is his duty to cooperate in the special counsel’s investigation of Russia’s influence in the 2016 election. It is increasingly clear that Trump will not volunteer to be interviewed; in that case, a subpoena is the legitimate and necessary remedy.
Too bad we can’t force a polygraph examination, as well; that would be really interesting.
