Pet lovers throughout New Mexico are asked to agree to pay the $25 adoption fee for a future adoptive family.

Through July 4, Best Friends Animal Society is asking pet lovers throughout New Mexico and around the country to “Pay It Forward” by agreeing to pay the $25 adoption fee for a future family at more than 260 of its network of shelters, including the Santa Fe Animal Shelter.

“If you get excited when a stranger pays for your coffee, imagine the joy you’ll bring to someone who is ready to adopt their next best friend and finds out the adoption fee has been covered,” said Julie Castle, chief executive officer of Best Friends Animal Society, in a news release.

And if you are ready to adopt a dog or cat, fees have been waived at the Santa Fe Animal Shelter through July 4. Available homeless pets there are neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and ready to go. Visit SFHumaneSociety.org to take a look.

“The pay it forward idea is a great way to help not only animals, but people too,” Murad Kirdar of the Santa Fe Animal Shelter said in a statement.

The waived fees apply to adult animals over 6 months old; puppies and kittens are half off the adoption fee.

Adoption fees can be donated at www.save-them-all.org and donors also can post a photo or comment with #PayItForward #SaveThemAll.
