Misinformation must be countered

-

I AM COMPELLED to respond to some letters from your June 20 Letters to the Editor. To (Robert D.) Godshall’s claim that the “IRS has reported that 1.5 million Americans have had their Social Security number stolen by (undocumented immigrants),” I have checked with the Social Security Administration. They referred me to their Statistics of Income (SOI) Division. They report: SOI does not have data for immigrants working with stolen Social Security numbers . ...

Then there was (Eric) Chamberlain, who said, “I can’t help note that the children in custody are much better off than many children living in inner cities run, ironically, by Democrats.” Did Chamberlain conduct a research project on inner cities and the party affiliation of their officials, or is he simply making an assumption and spreading misinformation? More importantly, why is he making such a comparison, except to show his contempt for the poor and the powerless?

Then there’s (Burke) Nelson, who says, “Fentanyl is killing hundreds . ... ,” insinuating that Mexico is the only place where this drug is smuggled from.

Last but not least, there’s (Glenn) Masaros, who states that “The Norwegians have nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize.” I was surprised to find that the president apparently has been nominated by some Republican congressmen, as well as some officials in Norway. According to my research, any official from any country can nominate anyone whom they deem to be worthy.

Does anyone really believe that a president who incites racial hatred will receive the prize for cooling down the toxic relationship with North Korea when the president himself fanned the flames to begin with? This is all very exhausting; however, people of good conscience must push back when lies and misinformation are propagated. GLORIA E. MIRABAL Los Lunas
