Journal launches interactive map of homicides in ABQ area

- — Elise Kaplan, Journal staff writer

With the number of homicides throughout Bernalillo County on pace to tie or surpass last year’s record high, the Journal is introducing an interactive informational map showing the locations of this year’s killings.

As of this writing, the year-to-date tally of 43 homicides in the city limits is slightly ahead of last year’s 40. By the end of 2017 there had been 75 killings — the highest in recent history.

In the county there were an additional five homicides so far this year, a number that

already matches last year’s total.

The map is sorted into two categories: solved (either by arrest or the death of a suspect) and unsolved.

The map includes snippets of information on homicides investigated by detectives from the Albuquerque Police Department or the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department. Details include where and when the killing occurred, the cause of death, the agency that investigated it and what we know about what happened.

Links to relevant stories are also included.

Not included are homicides that were determined to be justified, including fatal shootings by law enforcement. The Journal follows the same guidelines agencies use in reporting annual data to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program and as such doesn’t count such incidents in the murder and non-negligent manslaughter category.
