FIRST WALK-OFF GRAND SLAM
Daniel Robertson breaks out of slump with gamewinning grand slam to lift Tampa Bay to 6-4 win over Miami. It was the Rays’ first game-ending slam.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Daniel Robertson was slumping at the plate and out of the starting lineup. One big swing off the bench made him feel a lot better.
Robertson connected for a game-ending grand slam, lifting the Tampa Bay Rays to a 6-4 victory over the Miami Marlins on Sunday.
Robertson drove a 1-0 pitch from Kyle Barraclough (0-4) into the left-field seats. Robertson’s two-out shot was his eighth homer and came on the closer’s 40th pitch of the inning.
It was Tampa Bay’s first gameending slam and stopped an 8-for45 slide for the infielder.
Robertson traded an autographed baseball and a bat to get the ball back from a fan.
METS: In the latest bizarre medical development for the baffling New York Mets, ace pitcher Noah Syndergaard is headed back to the 10-day disabled list after contracting hand, foot and mouth disease.
The team believes it’s likely Syndergaard caught the contagious virus when he made an appearance at a baseball camp for kids during the All-Star break last week. Mets manager Mickey Callaway says that probably explains why Syndergaard weakened and his velocity decreased during Friday night’s victory at Yankee Stadium.
Syndergaard just returned from the DL on July 13 after sitting out more than six weeks with a strained ligament in his right index finger. The news comes two days after a startling health revelation from slugger Yoenis Cespedes, who said he might need surgery on both heels that would require an eight-to-10-month recovery.
