SPORTS SPEAK UP!

- Sportsspeakup@abqjournal.com

SOMEBODY ON local sports talk radio said that when UNM was recruiting Brian Urlacher, local fans boarded the “Lovington buses” to show support at his Friday night football games so UNM could gain an advantage over all of the other colleges that were recruiting him. (I have some land in Florida for sale, too.) Certainly we can count on UNM to take advantage this week of promoting the football program in a positive manner with one of their own already in the College Football Hall of Fame now entering the NFL Hall of Fame... can’t we? — Retro Lobo BRIAN URLACHER is no doubt the greatest football player from New Mexico of all time. He is also one of the best middle linebackers in NFL history. Urlacher needs to be honored at UNM this season at halftime, hopefully during a televised game. He was honored at UNM years ago and the ceremony was classless and embarrassing! Now that he will be honored this weekend in the Pro Football Hall of Fame it’s time for UNM to do it again and do something right for a change. A sellout crowd! Maybe invite Ditka and Butkus.

THANK YOU for the headline “Butt ready to make impact” on page B2 of the August 1, 2018, edition of the Journal. Our family has already made numerous jokes around the house based upon this hilarious headline. We’ll be making butt-impact jokes for the foreseeable future.

— Kelly Since it was his first full-pad practice after a knee injury, we might have used “Denver finally gets Butt in gear,” or something to that effect. — Randy, Journal

AFTER THE DEBACLE at the last Regents meeting, many of us were in shock. Despite advance warning of possible cuts/reductions, the public had hoped and prayed that creative intelligence would prevail. Anger and outrage now permeate the State. Citizens refuse to buy any UNM athletic tickets, in protest. The ultimate negligence is where were the sleeping/mute legislators who said when it was too late, “oh, we can fix this, not to worry.” By that time, all the soccer, skiing, and prize student-athletes were going or gone. This tragedy should have been avoided. — Furious Fan and Aggrieved Constituent
