Huge, versatile tent in the works

Tentsile’s ‘Universe’ hangs in a tree, or serves as a floating four-season shelter

Gear brand Tentsile brought out the public’s inner tree-fort-loving child when it launched a hanging tent years ago. Now, the U.K.-based brand thinks there’s an even more fun way to camp.

Tentsile announced its Universe tent this week. The “three-element” shelter works as a ground tent, a suspended tree tent, or as a floating shelter.

You read that right. Gear design has gotten weird in 2018.

“One thing we enjoy at Tentsile is pushing boundaries, so we’re excited to unveil our newest offering,” noted founder Alex Shirley-Smith.

The Universe not only floats, but it’s huge. It accommodates up to five adults and has copious floor space.

With its rain fly, the shelter offers 195 square feet of covered area.

But wait; there’s more! It is suitable for use as a four-season shelter because of an insulated floor. As you may have guessed, the floor inflates and holds air.

The brand notes the tent essentially converts into an “incredibly stable” three-person raft. The maximum load is 880 pounds. If a floating four-season tent-raft that can hang in the trees has you as excited as I am, you’ll have a chance to buy one soon. It hits retailers in February.

That should also give you time to start saving, as the Tentsile Universe will retail for $1,999.
