Flirty handkerchief hem great for summer
Dear Julia: I am plus size, and I’m looking for a dress with one of those handkerchief, or high-low, hemlines. Something loose-fitting that’s easy to wear, but not just a huge sack. I also need a pattern that is not for advanced sewers. Can you find something for me? — Terry B.
Hi Terry: I love a handkerchief hemline. I have a couple of dresses myself with this detail. It’s a fun, flirty look for the summer. I found a Butterick pattern that I think will work for you. It’s pattern No. 5655.
The hemline is long on the sides and higher in the middle at the front and back. The dress itself has a traditional hem, but a draped overlay provides the handkerchief effect. Although it’s loose-fitting, it skims the body, so it has a nice silhouette.
The pattern has a sleeveless and a shortsleeve view. And it comes in sizes 8-16 and 18W-24W. Butterick suggests choosing a stable knit, faille or lightweight linen fabric. It’s one of their Fast & Easy patterns, so I think you should be successful.
Dear Julia: I have made some lace collars and have plans for more, but I’m not sure what to do when they’re done! They must be carefully blocked if they’re washed, so I hesitate to permanently affix them to a blouse or dress. Any suggestions? — Tzivia L., Albuquerque
Hi Tzivia: Instead of permanently affixing the lace collars to a garment, what about making them into detachable collars? I’ve seen many of these, and they’re really beautiful. They usually have a closure in either the front or the back — sometimes a button or a ribbon. These detachable lace collars can be worn with many different outfits, from dresses to a T-shirt and jeans.
Readers, do you have any ideas for Tzivia’s lace collars?
