SPORTS SPEAK UP!

- sportsspeakup@abqjournal.com

IT WAS A bad scene Friday for all of the UNM student-athletes whose lives will be forever changed with their sports being cut. In her opening remarks, UNM President Garnett Stokes referenced the University of Alabama fielding only 16 sports (the NCAA minimum). For football, Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium is usually filled to its capacity of 101,821 fans. Football drives the bus. If the people of New Mexico continue to turn their backs to Lobo football, might there be more sports yet to be cut at UNM?

RUDY THE ATTORNEY: I lived in Boston for a long time before retiring here. Couch Red Auerbach said, in response to a question about why the Celtics were not selling out the Boston Garden, something to the effect “if you want to put (people) in the seats, you have to win.” Good words for all teams to live by. In addition, I do not see how attendance at an Lobo sporting event is going to increase given the Universities declining enrollment.

I’M ALL FOR women broadcasting soccer matches. It’s a sport they can play well and know something about. But please don’t have them broadcast basketball or football.

SUPER JOHN WILLIAMSON, ex -NMSU Aggie and New York Nets (old ABA) hoops player is an excellent candidate for the NM Sports HOF. … His retired jersey hangs in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Wow!
