Balanced attack lifts UNM women to victory

Five players score in 5-0 win; Lobo men to host Washington

- JOURNAL STAFF REPORT

The University of New Mexico women’s offensive eruption from Friday night carried over to Sunday afternoon, when they routed Idaho State 5-0 before an announced turnout of 395 fans at the UNM Track and Soccer Complex.

Five Lobos (Alesia Garcia, Jessie Hix, Jadyn Edwards, Madi Hirschman, Lexi Baca), three of them freshmen, had goals. The nine goals to date have come from seven players. Goalkeepers Emily Johnson and Malia Vanisi (in net for the middle 40 minutes) provided the clean sheet.

The Lobos are 2-1 after a season-opening loss at Texas Tech and a 4-2 win Friday over Pacific. Idaho State fell to 0-2 for the season, 0-4 all time vs. the Lobos.

The five goals ties for a single-game UNM record under Heather Dyche, having beaten Fresno State 5-1 in 2015 and Pacific 5-2 in 2016. All five goals by New Mexico were assisted.

UNM MEN: The Lobos hope to sustain momentum from their own Friday night win when they host No. 24 Washington tonight at 7.

The Lobo men’s program, destined for the chopping block after this season by decision of the UNM athletic administration and the Board of Regents, still showed sharp focus in their opener, a 4-2 home win over No. 22 Seattle Friday.

“They are dealing with more than they ever imagined,” Fishbein said in a Sunday email. He called Washington, a 2-0 home winner over Maryland on Friday, “a top opponent.”
