VOLUNTEERS
READWEST, an adult literacy program, is looking for volunteers to assist adult learners in speaking, reading, and writing in English. No teaching or foreign language experience necessary. We use an all English approach and have trainers to lead you and your learner down the path to success. We offer free training for English as a Second Language and Basic Literacy Tutoring, followed by a 3-4 hour workshop after you’ve been matched. Orientation is Sept. 20 at 10 a.m. or 6 p.m.. The ESL tutor training is Sept. 22 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.. The B.L. Orientation is Oct. 18 at 10 a.m. or 6 p.m.. The B.L. Tutor Training is Saturday, Oct. 20 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.. ADELANTE DEVELOPMENT
CENTER, INC., volunteers are needed on an ongoing basis for the Benefits Connection Center. Working in the center itself, you can help seniors and people with disabilities find out what benefits they are eligible to receive. To volunteer, you must be able to answer calls pleasantly, and you must be able to speak clearly and hear well on the phone, following a basic script. Perform administrative tasks like keyboarding, printing and faxing. Training will be provided. Several individuals are needed for doing outreach for the center. This important role would help educate seniors and people with disabilities about the Benefits Connection Center and what it can do to help them apply for benefits for which they may qualify. MEALS ON WHEELS, is in need of volunteer drivers to deliver meals to clients. Drivers are needed one day a week, or as a substitute when necessary, for approximately two hours. Duties include delivering a hot, nourishing meal to clients. Meals are picked up at 10:30 a.m. at one of four sites: Northside Presbyterian (north), Kaseman Hospital (east), Presbyterian Downtown (south) or Rust Medical Center (west). PAWS THRIFT STORE seeks volunteers to assist customers and to prepare donated items for sale in the store. Hours can be flexible. If interested in volunteering, drop in at the store at 4406 Menaul NE or call Beverly at 544-7776.
DONATIONS
WINGS FOR LIFE INTERNATIONAL: L.I.F.E. (Life-skills Imparted to Families through Education) is in need of paper goods to include paper plates, napkins, paper cups and utensils. Donations are needed to help fund the weekly program. Wings mission is to transform lives to break the generational cycle of incarceration; we provid a free dinner and then speakers who are experts in their fields teach about jobs, money, parenting and issues unique to incarceration. FEEDING PETS OF THE HOMELESS needs donations of dog and cat food as well as leashes and collars for cats and dogs. Donations can be dropped off at ABQ PetCare, 9032 Montgomery NE, 2998387, Aztec Animal Clinic, 4340 Coal SE, 265-4939 or VCAWyoming, 2740 Wyoming NE, #1, 298-7444. Donations will then be delivered by members of First Unitarian Church Animal Adovates to local homelss shelters for distribution. The organization also coordinates wellness and shot clinics for per owner’s animals and monetrary donations are appreciated for these clinics. feedingpetsnewmexico@gmail.com.
