Tuioti will not play vs. Aggies

Jones to start at QB for Lobos vs. NMSU

- BY STEVE VIRGEN ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR

Sheriron Jones will start at quarterback for New Mexico’s football team against rival New Mexico State Saturday in Las Cruces, coach Bob Davie told 95.9 FM Radio Monday morning.

Tevaka Tuioti, the Lobos’ starter, suffered a hard hit against Wisconsin on an option pitch and will be out this week with “concussion symptoms,” Davie said.

Jones, a junior transfer who began his college career at Tennessee, threw for 79 yards and a touchdown on 9-of-16 passing against the Badgers after Tuioti left the game late in the first quarter. Jones also threw two interceptions and had a fumble on a quarterback sneak in the second half, when the Lobos (1-1) were outscored 35-7 en route to a 45-14 loss.

Jones began the season as UNM’s No. 3 quarterback after he missed a week in August with right hamstring issues.

Senior Colin Gerhart, the Lobos’ No. 2 quarterback, suffered a foot sprain in the season opener against Incarnate Word and will miss the next five weeks, Davie said.

Freshman Trae Hall will be the backup quarterback on Saturday and Bryson Carroll is moving from running back to be the No. 3 quarterback, Davie said.

Davie said that Jones is not a typical No 3 quarterback and that he is anxious to see Jones play. He said Jones has a skill set similar to Tuioti, who is a dual threat.

The Lobos were preparing to be without Tuioti, Davie said Saturday after the loss to No. 6 Wisconsin. Davie made it official on Monday.
