Meow Wolf, guitarist/ nonprofit leader Bruce Dunlap of GiG Performance Space, and philanthropist couple Dan and Ashlyn Perry are some of the Santa Fe names to receive this year’s Governor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts.
The annual awards will be presented tonight in a public ceremony at the New Mexico Museum of Art.
Other 2018 recipients include Santa Clara Pueblo potter, and bronze and glass artist Jody Naranjo; local painter Jerry R. West; Galisteo-based art scholar Lucy Lippard; and Tatum-based bronze sculptor Curtis Fort.
Seattle’s Dale Chihuly, a glass artist with decadeslong connections to the Institute of American Indian Arts, is receiving a Leadership in the Arts award. The ceremony for the Awards for Excellence in the Arts is at the New Mexico Museum for the Art’s St. Francis Auditorium, 107 W Palace, from 5:15-7 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
HOMECOMING CONCERT: A Santa Fe-born musician who’s made a name for himself in Las Vegas will perform in his home town tonight at the Lensic. Jerry Lopez’s annual show in the Land of Enchantment is a benefit for the National Latino Behavioral Health Association to raise money for New Mexico college students. Though he moved away decades ago, Lopez — who has sung with the likes of Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan and Donny Osmond — earned a Platinum Achievement Award from the New Mexico Music Commission in 2015 following an album he made covering his father’s Spanish songs.
Lopez’s Vegas band gives a nod to his New Mexican roots with its name, Santa Fe & the Fat City Horns. Tickets for Jerry Lopez and Friends 2018 at the Lensic, 211 W. San Francisco, are $30-60. PART OF THE ‘PEACE TRAIL’: A body of work inspired by a painter’s life journey and travels opens tonight in Santa Fe. David Syre, a Bellingham, Wash.-based artist, will display about 25 paintings and drawings as part of his Ellsworth Gallery solo show. This is the middle section of a series of the shows on three continents, with exhibitions during 2018 by Syre in places that hold special meaning for the artist. The first was in Nice, France, and the last will be in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The exhibitions lead to Syre’s “Peace Trail” project in Tierra del Fuego. He’s developing a trail that connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, intended as a place of peace and spiritual awakening. “Soul Maps: The Journey Evolves” will be on view at Ellsworth Gallery, 215 E. Palace, until Sept. 29. Its opening reception is tonight from 5:30-8 p.m.
