Marking a milestone

Santa Fe Independent Film Festival celebrates its 10th year

-

Ten years.

That’s the milestone the Santa Fe Independent Film Festival is celebrating this year.

It recently released the first 10 features to be screened during the festival, which takes place Oct. 17-21 in Santa Fe. The first 10 films are:

“Shoplifters,” by Hirokazu Koreeda.

“On Her Shoulders,” by Alexandria Bombach.

“Loveling,” by Gustavo Pizzi.

“Wild Nights with Emily,” by Madeleine Olnek.

“Grass,” by Sang-Soo Hong.

“The Silence of Others,” by Almudena Carracedo and Robert Bahar.

“Good Girls Get High,” by Laura Terruso.

“Meow Wolf: The Origin Story,” by Jilann Spitzmiller and Morgan Capps.

“Revengeance,” by Jim Lujan and Bill Plympton.

“The Blessing,” by Hunter Robert Baker and Jordan Fein.

“I am really impressed with this list, including top foreign titles like the latest from Sang-Soo Hong, and ‘Shoplifters,’ the Palme d’Or winner, films from SFIFF alum Madeleine Olnek, Laura Terruso, and local alum Alexandria Bombach, plus Bill Plympton’s latest animated feature, and documentaries like ‘The Silence of Others’ and ‘The Blessing,’ ” says Jacques Paisner, SFIFF executive director. “It is the first chance for an audience to see these films in Santa Fe, and

I am pleased with the overall quality of the program.”

The festival has grown organically over the years, all while providing some of the best independent films.

“Since it grows organically, there haven’t been a lot of growth challenges,” Paisner says. “The fest has become so popular that some guests had trouble renting cars last year, but as the fest grows each year, Santa Fe is also growing, and we expect more and more traveling and international patrons in the coming years.”

Paisner says he is looking forward to seeing all of the films.

“With so many topquality films to choose from, films about authors, a film about Navajo coal miners, 4K restorations, comedies, love stories, as a 10th anniversary celebration, the festival will mark a decade in excellence in filmmaking,” he says. “I am really excited for our 10th Anniversary Gala at Hotel Santa Fe the weekend before the Fest, but most of all for the lights to dim and for the film to roll.”
