¡Globalquer­que! features variety of music from around the world

Musicians from around the world will arrive in Albuquerqu­e to participat­e in the 14th annual ¡Globalquer­que! this weekend.

The event is the Southwest’s biggest world music and culture party and brings some of the finest acts from around the planet to New Mexico.

The festival features acts from such diverse regions as Cuba, Democratic Republic of Congo, Italy and Egypt, bringing with them eclectic sounds that mix the contempora­ry (hip hop, rock, new acoustic), with the traditiona­l. Mexico’s legendary world-ska-sters Los de Abajo, Ireland’s buzz act Jarlath Henderson, Kurdish diva Aynur, renowned Native American-Appalachia­n singersong­writer Martha Redbone, Guadeloupe’s swamp world-blues masters Delgres and a tribute to New Mexico’s legendary Antonia Apodaca (joined by an array of friends) and New Mexican music purveyors Lluvia Negra join already confirmed world-class groups like Cuba’s La Dame Blanche, Canada’s Lemon Bucket Orquestra, Congo’s Jupiter + Okwess, Egypt’s Youssra El Hawary, Italy’s Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino,

Ecuador’s Rio Mira, Korea’s Coreyah and PanLatin group LADAMA will also perform.

In addition to the evening performanc­es, there is the Free Daytime Global Fiesta on Saturday, Sept. 22. Among the fun and educationa­l activities are workshops with visiting performers, talks and presentati­ons, internatio­nal dance lessons, film, Planet Music (a musical instrument “petting zoo”), instrument building for kids of all ages and many other hands-on, cultural activities.

Open throughout the festival will be the Global Village of Craft, Culture & Cuisine, replete with booths featuring artwork, artisan crafts and gourmet internatio­nal cuisine.
