Another game, another tough loss for the University of New Mexico men’s soccer team.

St. Mary’s Jakub Svehlik knocked in the game-winner with just 20 seconds left in the match, giving the 10th-ranked Gaels a 1-0 victory over the Lobos on Wednesday night at the UNM Soccer Complex.

In front of announced crowd of 875, the Lobos dropped to 3-6 on the season. Wednesday’s was their fifth one-goal defeat of the year.

“That’s about as tough as it comes. I thought we had some good sequences, but there were little mistakes,” UNM head coach Jeremy Fishbein said. “We gave the ball away, and that was a team that was very good in transition.

“Our guys train hard and play hard, these outcomes are tough. But we’ve got a good conference game coming up on Saturday against FIU. We’ll regroup and be excited for another one.”

St. Mary’s (10-0 ) outshot the Lobos 13-6 and had six shots on goal compared with UNM’s one off the foot of sophomore Matt Puig in the first half. But goalkeeper Alex Fetterly’s five saves helped UNM (3-6-1) get within those 20 seconds of overtime.

But in a scramble in front of the net, Fetterly got caught too far from the goal. Svehlik took a pass from teammate Jake Rudel and tapped the ball into the lower left corner.

The Lobos did create some chances, notably one by senior Antoine Vial in the 39th minutes.

New Mexico returns to Conference USA competition Saturday with a home game against Florida International.
