SANTA FE — The Santa Fe Police Department says a visitor from Michigan who was killed Wednesday night got into a confrontation with a group of five young people before he was fatally shot.

Police also released surveillance footage that partially captured the incident.

Richard Milan, a 64-year-old from Kalamazoo, Mich., was traveling from California to Michigan when he stopped in Santa Fe to visit family, according to a police department statement.

He was walking his dog on Lucia Lane off Airport Road around 9 p.m. Wednesday when he was confronted by a group of five people. Witnesses told the police that the group included both males and females and that they were in their late teens or early 20s.

The group fled on foot after Milan was shot once in the leg, police say. He was bleeding profusely when police got to the scene and died later at Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center.

The dog returned to where Milan started the walk, according to police. SFPD is still trying to identify suspects.

The police say they have recovered several videos from near the scene off Airport Road’s commercial strip.

The single video released by the police department Friday captures a person the police say is Milan walking his dog on the edge of a parking lot, but only from a distance.

The black-and-white video appears to show two people walking, one in front of the other. The first person turns out of the image and the second person, apparently Milan, stops shortly afterward. What seems to be some kind of action takes place within a few seconds, within the upper lefthand corner of the video image, but it’s not clear what’s going on.

What seem to be cellphone or flashlight lights appear about two minutes later. A police car shows up within seven minutes or so.
