Ohio State’s two late touchdowns staggers Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Dwayne Haskins threw two touchdown passes in the final seven minutes as No. 4 Ohio State wiped out a 12-point deficit to beat No. 9 Penn State 27-26 on Saturday night in a wild game between Big Ten powerhouse­s.

Trace McSorley had 461 total yards, including a career-high 175 rushing and threw two touchdown passes, and the Nittany Lions (4-1, 1-1) went up 26-14 with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter on Miles Sanders’s 1-yard plunge.

For the second straight season, Ohio State (5-0, 2-0) made a fourthquar­ter rally from a double-digit deficit. Haskins connected with Binjimen Victor, who weaved and slipped through tacklers for a 47-yard touchdown catch and run that cut it to 26-21 with 6:42 left before the winning drive.

No. 8 NOTRE DAME 38, STANFORD 17: In South Bend, Ind., Ian Book threw for four touchdowns and the defense of Notre Dame (5-0) defense stifled Stanford (4-1) to end a three-game losing streak to the Cardinal.

Starting his second straight game, Book completed 24 of 33 passes for 278 yards, including an 8-yard TD to Miles Boykin, who had career highs in receptions (11) and yardage (144).

No. 3 CLEMSON 27, SYRACUSE 23: In Clemson, S.C., with new starting quarterbac­k Trevor Lawrence knocked out of the game, Travis Etienne scored on a 2-yard run with 41 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to give Clemson a victory over Syracuse.

Etienne had three TDs and a career-high 203 yards rushing to bail out the quarterbac­k-depleted Tigers (5-0, 2-0 ACC). They went from having one too many starting-caliber QBs earlier in the week to not enough by the second half against the Orange (4-1, 1-1).

Lawrence left his first career start late in the second quarter with a possible concussion.

No. 1 ALABAMA 56, LA.-LAFAYETTE 14: In Tuscaloosa, Ala., Jaylen Waddle returned a punt for a touchdown and caught two scoring passes, including a 94-yarder, for Alabama.

Quarterbac­ks Tua Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts staked the Crimson Tide (5-0) to a 49-0 halftime lead over the Ragin’ Cajuns (1-3).

No. 2 GEORGIA 38, TENNESSEE 12: In Athens, Ga., D’Andre Swift ran for two touchdowns, including a late 14-yarder, and Georgia used dominant defense to overcome a sluggish offensive start.

No. 6 OKLAHOMA 66, BAYLOR 33: In Norman, Okla., Kyler Murray sat out Oklahoma’s first offensive series for disciplina­ry reasons then came on to pass for 432 yards and six touchdowns.

Austin Kendall opened the game, but Murray entered on the second possession and played nearly flawless football. His passing touchdown total tied for second-best in school history behind Baker Mayfield’s seven against Texas Tech in 2016.

Murray also ran for 45 yards and a score for the Sooners (5-0, 2-0 Big 12). Baylor is 3-2, 1-1.

No. 10 AUBURN 24, SOUTHERN MISS 13: In Auburn, Ala., Jarrett Stidham threw for 245 yards and two touchdowns and Auburn (4-1) beat Southern Miss (2-2) in a game disrupted for nearly three hours by lightning.

No. 11 WASHINGTON 35, No. 20 BYU 7: In Seattle, Jake Browning completed 23 of 25 passes for 277 yards and one touchdown, and No. 11 Washington (4-1) was thoroughly dominant on both sides in a rout of BYU (3-2).

No. 12 WEST VIRGINIA 42, No. 25 TEXAS TECH 34: In Lubbock, Texas, Will Grier threw for 370 yards and three touchdowns and Keith Washington thwarted a rally with 51-yard intercepti­on return for a score for West Virginia (4-0, 2-0 Big 12).

No. 13 UCF 45, PITTSBURGH 14: In Orlando, Fla., McKenzie Milton threw for 328 yards and four touchdowns and UCF extended the nation’s longest winning streak to 17 games.

No. 14 MICHIGAN 20, NORTHWESTE­RN 17: In Evanston, Ill., Karan Higdon ran for 115 yards and two touchdowns, Shea Patterson threw 196 yards and overcame a 17-point deficit.

STATE 14: In Manhattan, Kan., Sam Ehlinger threw for 207 yards and a touchdown, D’Shawn Jamison returned a punt 90 yards for another score and Texas snapped a five-game road losing streak to Kansas State.

No. 21 MICHIGAN STATE 31, CENTRAL MICHIGAN 20: In East Lansing, Mich., Brian Lewerke ran for two touchdowns and Michigan State overcame a slow start and an underwhelm­ing finish.

VIRGINIA TECH 31, No. 22 DUKE 14: In Durham, N.C., Ryan Willis threw for 332 yards and a career-best three TDs in his first start at Virginia Tech.

FLORIDA 13, No. 23 MISSISSIPP­I STATE 6: In Starkville, Miss., Feleipe Franks threw for 219 yards and Florida’s defense dominated.

Coach Dan Mullen won in his return to Starkville, guiding Florida to success in his first appearance at Davis Wade Stadium since leaving Mississipp­i State in November after nine mostly successful seasons.

HAWAII 44, SAN JOSE STATE 41 (5 OT): In San Jose, Calif., Ryan Meskell kicked a 35-yard field goal in the fifth overtime, making his last two kicks after missing a pair, lifting Hawaii (5-1, 2-1 MWC) past San Jose State (0-4, 0-1). SJSU’s Bryce Crawford then missed wide right from 47 yards.

BOISE STATE 34, WYOMING 14: In Laramie, Wyo., Brett Rypien recorded his fourth consecutiv­e 300-yard passing game this season, putting up two TDs and 342 yards through the air, in leading BSU (3-1, 1-0 MWC).

UT-PERMIAN BASIN 21, WESTERN NM 20: In Odessa, Texas, UT’s Marquis Simmons scored on a 9-yard run and Serio Landeros kicked the extra point for a win over Western (0-4, 0-2 RMAC). UTPB is 1-4, 1-2.

TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE 33, NM HIGHLANDS 30: In Kingsville, Texas, the host Javelinas (2-3) scored the winning touchdown with 4:23 left on a 30-yard pass from Koy Detmer Jr. to Donovan Moore that dropped the Cowboys’ record to 2-3.

MIDWESTERN STATE 31, EASTERN NM 23: In Portales, the Greyhounds’ Tayshaun Gary rushed for two TDs as Eastern (1-4, 1-2 Lone Star) lost to MSU (5-0, 3-0).
