UNLV starter Armani Rogers is out for Saturday vs. the Lobos after injuring a toe on Sept. 22.

UNLV coach Tony Sanchez on Monday announced starting quarterback Armani Rogers is out for about six weeks after suffering a broken toe against Arkansas State on Sept. 22, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported on Monday.

The Rebels (2-2), who were off this past weekend, will start 6-foot-3 sophomore Max Gilliam at quarterback this week against New Mexico (1-3) in the Mountain West opener for both teams in Las Vegas, Nev. The game kicks off at 2 p.m. and airs on AT&T SportsNet and the Lobo Radio Network.

UNM will start third string quarterback Sheriron Jones, who in four games has taken more snaps and passed for more yards than anyone on the team. Starter Tevaka Tuioti missed time earlier in the season while under concussion protocol and then broke his clavicle in Saturday’s loss to Liberty. Backup Coltin Gerhart injured his foot in the opener against Incarnate Word and has not returned yet to practice.

UNLV has opened as an 11½-point favorite against UNM.

PENN STATE: Offensive coordinator Ricky Rahne took responsibility Monday for calling the failed fourth-and-5 running play on the Nittany Lions’ final drive against Ohio State, saying “ultimately I didn’t give our guys the best chance to succeed.”

The play came at the Ohio State 43 with 1:22 left in the fourth quarter Saturday night and the Buckeyes leading 27-26. Quarterback Trace McSorley, who accounted for a school-record 461 total yards in the game, handed to Miles Sanders on an inside run and the tailback was stuffed for a 2-yard loss. Buckeyes defensive end Chase Young looped inside on the play and made the tackle after being virtually unblocked.

The Buckeyes ran out the clock from there.

“I was upset with (the play call) because there was a particular thing that I should have foreseen and I didn’t,” Rahne told The Associated Press.

Rahne, in his first season as No. 11 Penn State’s playcaller, said he was most upset that head coach James Franklin and McSorley were left to answer for his call after the loss to the third-ranked Buckeyes. After games, Franklin’s policy is that only he and the players address the media.

TEXAS TECH: Quarterback Alan Bowman suffered a partially collapsed lung in the Red Raiders’ loss on Saturday, but it could’ve been worse. Bowman avoided a fracture, internal bleeding and broken ribs.

“He got hit just right. It was a clean solid hit by two guys at the same time,” head coach Kliff Kingsbury said during his weekly Big 12 teleconference on Monday. “It’s was about as clean as you could hope when talking about one of these injuries.”

After suffering the injury, Bowman was taken to the hospital and has been there since.

CLEMSON: The Tigers got some positive news Monday when coach Dabo Swinney said the 6-foot-6 starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence was back at practice.

Swinney had said Saturday that Lawrence had concussion-like symptoms when he headed to the locker room before the end of the first half against Syracuse.

But co-offensive coordinator Jeff Scott said earlier Monday that Lawrence’s injury was more a neck strain. The quarterback’s ability to work out with the team makes it more likely he’ll be ready for Wake Forest (3-2, 0-1).
