RAINS HEADED TO N.M.
Remnants of Tropical Storm Rosa could bring needed moisture to drought-stricken Four Corners
A storm named Rosa could bring to western New Mexico and the Four Corners something they haven’t seen much of recently: muchneeded rainfall.
According to forecasters at the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, remnants of Tropical Storm Rosa will move across the Southwest today and into western and northwestern New Mexico, bringing the possibility of rainfall to areas that have experienced exceptional drought conditions for several months.
“This certainly will not be a drought-buster, but this could do some cutting into the drought,” said Royce Fontenot, senior hydrologist with the National Weather Service office in Albuquerque. “We’re going to have to see how the forecast precipitation works out, but certainly there is the possibility, if the forecast does come out pretty well, that we’ll see some improvement in the drought.”
Showers and thunderstorms also will spread eastward over central and eastern areas of New Mexico today and tonight, delivering the potential for heavy rainfall that could lead to localized flash flooding.
High temperatures in the Albuquerque area
are expected to be in the low 80s today through Thursday. Isolated showers and storms will remain in the forecast Wednesday, with mostly dry and breezy weather expected for Thursday and Friday in the Albuquerque area.
Northern and central New Mexico could see some changes this weekend, as an area of deep low pressure is expected to develop over the region, bringing increasingly unsettled weather and lower-than-average temperatures.
That also means the possibility of more precipitation in the Four Corners area this weekend and early next week, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Jennifer Shoemake.
“A large system is going to dive into the Great Basin and move toward the Four Corners area,” Shoemake said. “This is going to feel a little bit more like fall. We’ll see an increase in winds across much of the state and, on top of that, we’ll see moisture come in by Sunday.”
