Stars’ top line gets five goals in rout of Jets; Sabres topple Rangers

DALLAS — Jamie Benn had two power-play goals, and Tyler Seguin scored another and had a goal at even strength as the Dallas Stars beat the Winnipeg Jets 5-1 on Saturday night.

Dallas dominated the first period with a 16-9 advantage in shots and two goals less than three minutes apart by Alexander Radulov and Seguin, the latter on the power play.

Benn scored power-play goals in the second and third periods, and Seguin scored in the third.

The Stars’ top line accounted for all five goals and five assists. Seguin and Radulov each had two assists.

SABRES 3, RANGERS 1: In Buffalo, N.Y., Conor Sheary scored two goals and Carter Hutton made 43 saves as Buffalo beat New York for its first victory of the season.

Captain Jack Eichel added an empty-net goal in the final seconds for Buffalo. After being booed by their home fans in a shutout loss to Boston in Thursday’s opener, the Sabres (1-1-0) snapped a six-game losing streak at Key Bank Center dating to last season.

BLACKHAWKS 5, BLUES 4 (OT): In St. Louis, Jonathan Toews scored his third goal of the game 2:20 into overtime as Chicago beat St. Louis.

Toews tied it at 4 at 6:59 of the third period when he corralled the rebound of Alex DeBrincat’s slap shot and pushed it past goalie Jake Allen. Toews scored the winner on a breakaway to give the Blackhawks their second consecutiv­e overtime victory.

LIGHTNING 2, PANTHERS 1

(SO): In Tampa, Fla., J.T Miller and Nikita Kucherov scored in the shootout as Tampa Bay beat Florida in the opener for both teams.

Florida goalie Roberto Luongo departed midway through the second period with a lower-body injury after teammate Frank Vatrano landed on his extended right leg during a scramble in front of the goal. The 39-year-old Luongo, who stopped all 13 shots he faced in just over 32 minutes, needed help to skate off the ice.

CANADIENS 5, PENGUINS 1: In Pittsburgh, Paul Byron had two goals and added an assist in Montreal’s victory over Pittsburgh.

Byron had his first multi-goal game since scoring a hat trick in December against Detroit.

Brendan Gallagher, Joel Armia and Charles Hudon also scored to help the Canadiens snap a five-game losing streak against Pittsburgh.

PREDATORS 4, ISLANDERS 3: In New York, Viktor Arvidsson scored twice as Nashville spoiled New York’s home opener.

Mattias Ekholm and Craig Smith also scored for Nashville, and P.K. Subban had two assists. Juuse Saros, starting in place of reigning Vezina Trophy winner Pekka Rinne, finished with 26 saves to help the Predators win their second straight.

DEVILS 5, OILERS 2: In Gothenburg, Sweden, Kyle Palmieri and Travis Zajac scored two goals each to lead New Jersey past Edmonton in the season opener for both teams.

Stefan Noesen also scored, Miles Wood had two assists and Keith Kinkaid made 17 saves.

SENATORS 5, MAPLE LEAFS 3: In Toronto, Thomas Chabot had two goals and an assist, and Craig Anderson made 34 saves in Ottawa’s victory over Toronto.

Dylan DeMelo and Chris Tierney also scored for Ottawa.

AVALANCHE 5, FLYERS 2: In Denver, Colin Wilson scored two goals, Semyon Varlamov had 35 saves as Colorado beat Philadelph­ia.

Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and an assist for the Avs.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS 2, WILD

1 (SO): In St. Paul, Minn., Erik Haula scored in the shootout as Vegas beat Minnesota.

Max Pacioretty scored his first goal for Vegas, tying it with 1:31 left in regulation.

FLAMES 7, CANUCKS 4: In Calgary, Alberta, the host Flames scored four goals in the third period to overcome Vancouver.

DUCKS 1, COYOTES 0: In Glendale, Ariz., John Gibson stopped 41 shots as Anaheim beat Arizona.
