A man died in the hospital Oct. 12 after police say he was shot by a woman earlier this month at a Northeast Albuquerque apartment complex.

Albuquerque police spokesman Simon Drobik said the Oct. 1 shooting of 36-year-old Jason Duran is being considered a justified homicide.

Officers responded to the shooting at the Sedona Ridge Apartments on Wyoming NE near Comanche around 1 a.m. and found Duran hit in the neck.

Duran was hospitalized in critical condition, where he remained until family members say he was taken off life support.

Drobik said detectives spoke to the woman who shot Duran at the scene and she was released pending a review by the District Attorney’s Office.

He would not give any other details of the shooting.

Duran’s father, Abraham, said his brother called to tell him Duran was in the hospital.

“One of those phone calls that, you know, as soon as you get it, something’s wrong,” he said.

Abraham Duran said his son was coherent for four days after the shooting and surgery before slipping into a coma at University of New Mexico Hospital.

“They pulled the plug on him,” Duran said.

Originally from New York, Duran said his son had worked as medical supply staff at UNMH and other local hospitals for several years.

“He knew everybody in there, everybody knew him,” he said. “He was a colorful character.”
