Spurs rally to beat winless Lakers in OT

Orlando holds on to beat Celtics; Butler returns as T-Wolves win

LOS ANGELES — Patty Mills hit a go-ahead jumper with 6.8 seconds left and the San Antonio Spurs kept the Los Angeles Lakers winless with LeBron James, rallying from a six-point deficit in the final minute of overtime for a wild 143-142 victory Monday night.

James hit a tying 3-pointer with 2.4 seconds left in regulation and finished with 32 points, 14 assists and eight rebounds. But the superstar missed two free throws with 12.8 seconds to play, and Mills coolly put the Spurs ahead.

James missed a long shot at the buzzer, thoroughly deflating Staples Center.

LaMarcus Aldridge had 37 points and 10 rebounds, and DeMar DeRozan added 32 points and 14 assists as the Spurs made a tremendous rally to bounce back from a loss at Portland.

Kyle Kuzma had 37 points and eight rebounds for the Lakers, who played without suspended starters Brandon Ingram and Rajon Rondo. Josh Hart added 20 points and 10 rebounds.

James’ dramatic 3 from a full step beyond the arc capped the Lakers’ improbable rally from an eightpoint deficit in the final 1:04 of regulation. The Lakers then took a 142-136 lead late in overtime with a lineup matching James with three second-year pros and unsung rookie Johnathan Williams in his NBA debut.

Ingram and Rondo began their suspension­s stemming from their brawl with the Houston Rockets last Saturday. Ingram got a four-game ban for confrontin­g an official and throwing punches, while Rondo got three games for punching and spitting on Chris Paul.

RAPTORS 127, HORNETS 106: In Toronto, Kawhi Leonard scored 22 points, Kyle Lowry had 16 points and a season-high 14 assists, and Toronto never trailed in a victory over Charlotte, the Raptors’ fourth straight win to open the season. Toronto is the first NBA team to reach four wins. Leonard returned after sitting out Saturday night’s road win over Washington, the second game of a back-to-back. The two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year was limited to nine games last season because of a quadriceps injury.

MAGIC 93, CELTICS 90: In Boston, Nikola Vucevic had 24 points and 12 rebounds while Orlando survived two 3-point attempts by Boston in the closing seconds to beat the Celtics.

Trailing 91-90 with 14.2 seconds to play, Boston was forced to foul Evan Fournier after Orlando inbounded the ball. He stepped to the line and made both free throws with 7.8 seconds left.

Kyrie Irving then missed a 3 from the right corner, and after Al Horford grabbed the rebound and fed it out — Gordon Hayward’s rimmed out just before the buzzer sounded. TIMBERWOLV­ES 101, PACERS 91: In Minneapoli­s, Jimmy Butler returned to Minnesota’s lineup and scored 20 points to lead the Timberwolv­es to a win over the Pacers.

Butler, who received a mix of boos and cheers during player introducti­ons, sat out Saturday due to precaution­ary rest. Karl-Anthony Towns added 17 points and 12 rebounds for Minnesota, while rookie guard Josh Okogie scored 12 points off the bench.

WARRIORS 123, SUNS 103: In Oakland, Calif., Stephen Curry scored 15 of his 29 points in the third quarter and also had eight assists, leading Golden State past Phoenix.

Kevin Durant scored 22 points and Draymond Green dished out eight of 35 assists for the two-time defending NBA champions.

BUCKS 124, KNICKS 113: In Milwaukee, Giannis Antetokoun­mpo had 31 points and 15 rebounds, Khris Middleton sank a pair of late 3-pointers and the Bucks survived a furious second-half rally by New York to hold off the Knicks.

Middleton was efficient in scoring 30 points, going 7 of 8 from 3-point range. Antetokoun­mpo only had one 3, but it came in a big spot, giving unbeaten Milwaukee the lead for good midway through the fourth period. MAVERICKS 115, BULLS 109: In Dallas, DeAndre Jordan became the first Dallas player in 24 years to start a season with three straight double-doubles, getting 18 points and 16 rebounds to help the Mavericks beat the Bulls. WIZARDS 125, TRAIL BLAZERS 124 (OT): In Portland, Ore., Markieff Morris had 28 points including six 3-pointers and Washington won their its game of the season with an overtime victory over Portland.

GRIZZLIES 92, JAZZ 84: In Salt Lake City, Mike Conley scored 23 points to lead the Grizzlies to a victory over the Jazz.
