DAMP ON CAMPUS

- JOURNAL STAFF REPORT

Niraj Adhikari, a University of New Mexico computer science major and Nepal native, walks across campus in the rain Tuesday. Rain totals in the metro area generally came in at about a third of an inch, with drizzle still falling in the early evening Tuesday. One reporting area in Corrales logged in with .46 inches, with Rio Rancho stations reporting about .21 inches. Edgewood, Cedar Crest and Sandia Park averaged a little more than a third of an inch. The National Weather Service forecasts scattered showers today through the early afternoon. A high near 63 is expected today, with northwest winds at about 5 mph. Albuquerque Fire Rescue helped three people out of an arroyo Tuesday morning.

Swift water rescue crews brought three people safely out of a northeast Albuquerque arroyo filled by heavy rainfall Tuesday morning, according to Albuquerque Fire Rescue.

Department spokesman Lt. Tom Ruiz said the water was roughly knee high and moving very quickly.

“Because of the time of day, it was still dark,” Ruiz said. “I don’t think the people saw the imminent danger.”

Ruiz said just before 7 a.m. crews were called to the area near the Pan American Frontage Road NE between Candelaria and Menaul for reports of people in the arroyo. Arriving crews found five homeless people had taken shelter in the area.

Two of the people were able to get out on their own. Swift water rescue crews used life safety ropes and flotation devices to get the other three out, Ruiz said.

There were no injuries to anyone involved, he said.
