A LONG TIME COMING: It’s been 15 long years since West Las Vegas High School has been able to celebrate a victory over St. Michael’s, but that streak was squashed Friday when the Dons came away with a 14-13 victory over the Horsemen. John Balizan hit Omar Gallardo for the winning touchdown with 21 seconds remaining.

SOFTBALL

NEW COACH: Pojoaque Valley High School hired Chris Ortiz as the new softball coach to replace Ricky B. DeHerrera. Ortiz served as the Elkettes JV coach for several years before landing the top spot.

MORE FOOTBALL

HONORED AGAIN: New Mexico Highlands University defensive back Malik Brown earned his second Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference defensive player of the week honor this season after finishing with a career-best 15 tackles and two intercepti­ons. He also had one pass breakup and returned his intercepti­ons for a total of 38 yards Saturday as the Cowboys beat South Dakota School of Mines and Technology 53-52.

CROSSCOUNT­RY

JAMBOREE JUBILATION: The Academy for Technology and the Classics outlasted Pecos 40-47 to win the girls small-school portion of the Rio Rancho Jamboree on Saturday. Maggie Rittmeyer paced the Phoenix, finishing fourth in a time of 21 minutes, 28.30 seconds. Vanessa Dominguez led the Panthers’ effort finishing third.
