‘DAY OF THE TREAD’ DEAD AHEAD

Annual bicycling event for the whole family set for Sunday, with something for all skill levels.

- JOURNAL STAFF REPORT

Calling all families, kids, cycling enthusiasts and, well, anyone looking for fun and exercise this coming Sunday.

The annual Albuquerque Day of the Tread for all skill levels is ready to ride on its widest variety of courses that this year include Rail Runner family rides ranging from nine to 100 miles including short jaunts on the train.

This is a full dress up, as in Halloween or Day of the Dead, costume event that in recent years has drawn 20,000 participants, including many from out of state.

Routes leave Albuquerque’s Downtown Civic Plaza and can include historical neighborhoods of Old Town and the Museum District, Bosque Trail Park and Rio Grande River, a “legendary” Recharge Zone at El Pinto Restaurant, foothills of the Sandias Mountains, a hill challenge climb, Tramway, High Desert, Sandia Pueblo, Bernalillo, Algodones and Placitas.

Recharge stations are every seven to 12 miles along the way include live music, drinks and snacks.

All skill levels include the KIDS K featuring striders, tricycles and bikes leaving the 3rd Street start line and circling the Albuquerque Civic Plaza twice with family and friends. Mascots lead the way, organizers said. Helmets for all are mandatory. Day of the Tread courses close at 5:30 p.m.

Registration costs range from $15 to $100 depending on route/ event chosen and packets must be picked up today.
