Pearce scores low with many groups

-

AS THE Nov. 6 election approaches, I have to wonder if it would be prudent to give Congressman (Steve) Pearce a vote to be the governor of our fine state. His voting record is hardly laudable for the average working stiff, retired person, veteran, child, parent with children in our schools, or one who cares about clean air or water for their family to breathe and drink. His voting record in Congress shows who he is and what he cares about, and it’s not you and me.

According to the non-partisan, non-profit votesmart.org, his most recent data for each of these groups rating him are as follows: Vietnam Veterans of America — 0 percent; Retired Enlisted Association (retired military benefits) — 7 percent; Alliance for Retired Americans — 0 percent; National Education Association — 0 percent; Clean Water Action — 0 percent; Food Policy Action — 0 percent; National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association — 20 percent; League of Women Voters Energy Score — Alzheimers Impact Movement — 0 percent; National Association of Colored People (NAACP) — 5 percent; American Public Health Association — 17 percent. His average score for all of his time in Congress for K-12 education was a dismal 8 percent. On the other hand, and I will be the first to admit I picked and chose the class of citizens represented in the votes he has made, if you are a wealthy banker or industrialist, he will be your best choice. The “Financial Executives International” gave him a 100 percent score.

It seems more than clear where his interests lie and what he will and won’t do for struggling New Mexico working families. If we desire an honest, fair, trustworthy and responsible governor, he is not the one. He has not earned our vote. MICHAEL SAUBER Silver City
