YOU ONLY REAL ID

ONCE: Steve Miller of Albuquerque emails he “was recently able to get through the Real ID driver’s licence process with just one visit to an MVD Express office.” But. “My new driver’s licence came attached to an MVD New Mexico paper which had as its last sentence ‘Please bring a Social Security card and birth certificate to the MVD when you come in for a new driver’s licence.’ This statement has me mystified. Since I already have my Real ID driver’s license, it’s too late to tell me this for my first one, and I have read that we don’t need to go through all these ‘hoops’ when its time to get a Real ID driver’s license renewed, so just what is the above sentence trying to tell me? Do I really need to bring my birth certificate and Social Security card in again in four years when this DL expires? Thanks for your assistance in de-mystifying this for me.”

Thank Kevin Kelley of the state Taxation and Revenue Department, which oversees the Motor Vehicle Division. He says, “We can certainly revise that language, or at a minimum only put it on the document that accompanies a DAC (Driver Authorization Card) or non-compliant ID but not on a Real ID-compliant DL/ID.

“To confirm the reader’s understanding, once a driver has met the requirements for a Real IDcompliant DL or ID, he won’t have to provide those documents again upon renewal. The only time we would require those documents is when a driver is shifting from one type of credential to another.”

AND MAKE SURE YOUR ADDRESSES MATCH:

Steve reports that he “did run into one ‘nearproblem,’ and that was with the requirement to have two documents showing my local residence address. I had brought seven such documents, but the lady handling my application noticed that on three of the seven, my street name of Lagrima de Oro NE had been abbreviated by the U.S. Post Office to Lgrma de Oro and thus couldn’t be used. I’m pretty sure it was the USPS that shortened Lagrima to Lgrma since I’ve never used that shortened version and they were all shortened the same way.

“Luckily I still had four that had the correct spelling, but everyone should know to check that the spelling of their street name is correct on all of the documents they bring to the MVD office.”

FIXING A BAD SEAM ON PASEO DEL NORTE:

Okie45bill emails, “There is an annoying bump or bad seam in the right westbound lane of Paseo just before the San Pedro intersection. This bump also is in the northbound turn lane from westbound Paseo to northbound San Pedro.”

Kimberly Gallegos, who handles information for the New Mexico Department of Transportation’s District Three office, says, “NMDOT District Three is aware of the issue and is currently scheduling a project to mill out the intersections on Paseo at San Pedro, Louisiana and Wyoming. We will be utilizing specialized equipment to produce a smoother surface at each of these intersections.”

AND ERASING SOME RANDOM STRIPES:

Meanwhile, Asher Zeligc of Rio Rancho emails that “as you exit I-25 south at Paseo, at the exit’s light there are two lanes exclusively for a left turn onto Paseo’s two lanes heading east. Unfortunately, the third lane from the left on the exit has little, intermittent, white markings turning left also. As a result, a person turning left from that lane either cuts unexpectedly in front of someone in the second lane or, if he or she follows the markings, will drive right into the bridge railings. This is not a new problem.” But now it’s a new fix. Gallegos says, “This issue has been evaluated by our traffic section and they are looking at eradicating the small markings that are making this lane look like it also turns left.”

CAN WE GET A CAMERA ON ALAMEDA OR MONTAÑO?

Dan Klein asks, “Why doesn’t NMRoads.com have cameras that the public can view on Alameda and Montaño? They have dozens of cameras on Interstate 40 and Paseo del Norte, but none on the(se) other two river crossings. I usually look at NMRoads before I head out to make sure I am not stuck anywhere.”

Gallegos says, “It is always awesome to hear that the public is utilizing nmroads.com. It is a great tool! Montaño is not a state-owned road, so more than likely that is the reason there is not a camera at the river crossing at that location.”And she is looking into Alameda “to see if there is potential for cameras to be placed here in the future. Thank you for checking in with us!”
