Vote for him to continue creating new opportunities in our state

- BY SEN. TOM UDALL NEW MEXICO DEMOCRAT AND FORMER SEN. JEFF BINGAMAN NEW MEXICO DEMOCRAT

In this election, New Mexicans have an opportunity to put our state on a long-term path toward an economy that works for everyone. We can vote for a future with smart investments and good jobs that will enable our children to stay in New Mexico and raise their own families in this state we love. Now, more than ever, we need serious leadership, and a practical and hopeful vision to guide us forward.

During our service to New Mexico in the United States Senate, and as former New Mexico attorneys general, we both understand what it takes to fight for justice and for our shared principles. Martin Heinrich has proven in his 10 years of service in both the House of Representatives and the Senate that he will deliver results on the issues that matter for our state, and that he will stand up when it counts for New Mexico values.

Since being elected to the Senate, Martin has shown a steady resolve to get things done for New Mexico — even during challenging political times. By taking on leadership roles on key committees for New Mexico, Martin secured increased funding and new forward-looking missions at our national labs and military bases, while also strengthening worker and community safety. He also helped steer numerous major conservation victories over the finish line that were decades in the making to grow our outdoor recreation economy.

Martin led bipartisan negotiations in the Senate on a major energy agreement that opened markets for domestic energy produced in New Mexico, leading to unprecedented construction of clean energy projects and fueling thousands of new jobs across our state. He has advanced innovative policy ideas to improve education from early childhood to workforce training through affordable college and apprenticeships. He has also worked to secure muchneeded resources for our rural and tribal communities that are battling the opioid epidemic.

We are also proud that Martin is unafraid to speak out, and stand up for our values and for justice for all New Mexico communities. He is fighting to protect affordable health care and programs hard-working New Mexicans rely on, like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. He is working to ensure equal pay for equal work at a time when the wage gap is especially large for Hispanic and Native American women. He thinks carefully about our military engagements overseas and fights to defend Americans’ civil liberties at home.

And, as the son of an immigrant, Martin understands what our nation represents for those who seek to build a better life here for their families. He is fighting back against President Trump’s inhumane policies that separate families and deny refuge to those fleeing violence and persecution. Martin understands that in New Mexico, our diversity is what makes us strong.

Martin Heinrich possesses the serious leadership our state needs in the years to come. We hope you will join us in voting for him to continue creating new opportunities for New Mexico to grow and thrive.
