I won’t stop fighting for NM

I am ready to keep working to move our state forward

- BY SEN. MARTIN HEINRICH NEW MEXICO DEMOCRAT

Since New Mexicans put their trust in me to represent them in the United States Senate, I have remained focused on building a brighter future for our state. My priorities are New Mexico’s priorities — an economy that works for everyone, affordable health care, keeping our nation safe, and continuing to make our state a better place to live in and call home. Despite polarized politics in Washington, over the past six years, I’ve continued to find ways to solve problems and deliver results for New Mexico.

As we look to what’s ahead for New Mexico, I know there’s still much more to do. I know the value of investing in our communities and creating opportunity in every corner of our state.

That starts with creating opportunities for every single New Mexico child. Investing in early education has shown to be the most effective thing we can do to prepare our children to succeed. That’s why I was one of the first elected leaders to push for investing a portion of our state’s Permanent Fund to make sure all New Mexico children get a head start. We need to create a fully-funded, locally-driven public education pipeline — one that carries students from early childhood education to affordable college or technical degrees — to fill the jobs of the future that are being created in New Mexico.

As new threats emerge and technology evolves, so must the missions of our military installations and labs. That’s why I’ve taken leadership roles on committees that set the policies for our military and our national energy priorities. I have passed defense legislation and steered funding that will help New Mexico maintain its role as a leader in national defense for years to come. I’ve proudly delivered more than $1.25 billion in new investment for New Mexico’s military installations, secured multiple forward-looking missions at our bases and our national defense labs, and created thousands of new jobs in national security and innovation.

With our abundant wind and sun, and premier energy research and development, New Mexico can and should lead the nation as we transition to cleaner energy production. I successfully negotiated a bipartisan agreement in the Senate that extended renewable energy tax incentives that are driving billions in investment and creating thousands of jobs in New Mexico’s clean energy industry — especially in rural communities. Last year, New Mexico led the entire nation in building new wind projects. If we take the steps to prepare our energy infrastructure for the future, we can keep creating good-paying jobs and bring new revenue to our state.

I understand how important our public lands are to our way of life in the Land of Enchantment. Public lands connect people of all means with our traditions and the great outdoors — when we protect these places, we attract visitors from around the world and expand opportunities for locals to enjoy outdoor traditions like hunting, camping and fishing that are among the pillars of Western culture and a thriving outdoor recreation economy. In recent years, I have created numerous new protections and expanded access to our public lands that are fueling New Mexico’s $9.9 billion outdoor recreation industry and the 99,000 jobs it supports.

And we can’t leave our rural communities behind. We need to improve access to broadband in rural and tribal communities, support rural health clinics and invest in infrastructure.

I also refuse to back down from standing up for the things that make America the greatest nation on Earth. I stood with New Mexicans who oppose a border wall that our border communities do not want and inhumane immigration policies that turn away refugees and separate immigrant parents from their children. I helped stop Republican attempts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid, and take away health care coverage from hundreds of thousands of New Mexicans. And I have called for building an economy that works for all of us by rebuilding our infrastructure and investing in our communities instead of giving away billions in tax breaks to major corporations and the wealthiest Americans.

As I humbly seek your support for another term in the Senate, I know there’s much more to do. If you put your trust in me again, I am energized and ready to keep working to move our state forward. I won’t stop until every New Mexican, in every corner of our state, is thriving.
